1. Semester

Group work: Free design of a concept and creation of a presentation folder - focus on team work (small groups) with broad solutions in mind; preparation of an exhibition concept of a topic of the students' own choice; groundplan and wall layout, budgeting, maybe fabrication of a presentation model

Discussion of relevant sociological and cultural-historical explanatory models dealing with the event society, fun industry, pop culture, lifestyle, media environments, globalisation, the construction of identity and the like. Networking with regional and international stakeholders.

Introduction to the occupational field (presentations, exhibitions, museums, experience worlds, science parks) and responsibilities (design, management, planning). Presentation and analysis of national and international exhibitions and museums. Analyses of national and international designers' works. Discussion of the ongoing internationally-relevant exhibition and museum discourse. Analysis of postmodern immersive strategies, experience zones and exhibition strategies.

Impartation of a project idea in the form of folders, plans, models, drafts, multimedia presentations, trailers, etc. and of basic knowledge of typography, layout and prepress.

Content of the course: drawing plans of buildings (groundplan, elevation and wall layout) as well as a basic introduction to CAD programmes. Existing plans are being changed and redrawn.

Historic development of the museum and exhibition sector. Introduction to and overview of the three possible forms of transmission ("integrative", "media-based" and "personal"). Teaching the students to critically reflect on given topics and to get used to the international discourse. Demonstration of basic developments and recent tendencies in the international exhibition and museum scene.

Impartation of basic theoretical and practical knowledge regarding materials relevant for realising exhibitions.

Visualization of exhibition concepts using scale modelling; Impartation of the most important principles of the presentation of an object according to various criteria such as aesthetics, didactics or illustration.

Basic conservatorial knowledge, international guidelines concerning indoor temperature, lighting and indoor pollution, technological and material basics of artistic respectively cultural-historical exhibits, differences between exhibitions and museums.

The usage of multimedia in exhibitions, film and videoprojections, audio concepts, animations, interactive objects and installations, special effects, online presence of exhibitions and museums.

Methods of immersion, creation of immersive experiences with the help of fragrance, sound, color and responsive media; Planning and design of visitor interactions

Group Work: Realisation of a public exhibition/presentation in or outside Graz respectively in public places. Focus lies on team work with workable solutions within the limits of a certain financial framework in mind. Content: concepts, exhibition graphics, use of media, possible lending policies, setup of the exhibition, designing of posters and invitations, dismantling of the exhibition.

The course deals with the special artistic and logistic problems occuring when planning and realising exhibition stands.
