The Institute for Design & Communication (IDK) at FH JOANNEUM was right in the thick of things at the festival’s second edition: moderating events, designing the exhibition, creating interactive installations, and, of course, bringing plenty of student energy to the event.
In April and May, GENERATE26 became a gathering place for anyone interested in discovering what’s possible today with AI, generative tools, media art, and electronic music. In workshops, participants had the opportunity to experiment with generative AI and generative digital tools or immerse themselves in the world of electronic mixing.
At Generate Main on May 13, the focus was on talks, tech, and new ideas. Birgit Bachler, program director of Information Design, served as the moderator for the day.
But there was much more to discover between the talks: Media and Interaction Design students from the IDK developed interactive light installations that transformed the event itself into an immersive experience.
The finale was loud, visually stunning, and immersive: Generate Night combined electronic music with live visuals and video installations. Our master’s students in Media and Interaction Design played a central role in this. Together with the Graz-based creative studio MO:YA, they developed visuals and brought Generate Night to life with large-format projections and digital images.
MO:YA was founded by IDK graduates Werner Huber and Roland Mariacher. What began in 2011 as a VJ collective in Graz has evolved into an internationally active studio for immersive media art and audiovisual installations. Today, the two also contribute their experience as instructors at the IDK and in workshops for young media artists.
GENERATE26 showcases what happens when students, artists, creatives, tech experts, and the music scene come together: a space for experimentation, exchange, and collaborative exploration.
