Job description: Speech therapists
Company: Department for Hearing, Voice and Speech Disorders at the Tyrolean Provincial Hospital in Innsbruck
Place: Innsbruck, Austria
We did our internships from May to June 2014.
Contact Melanie Trieb
Contact Lisa-Maria Zengerer
What we did:
Medical histories: collecting patient medical histories
Audiometry: conducting subjective and objective hearing tests
Work shadowing: gaining a taster of associated professional fields such as the use of hearing implants or adaptation of hearing aids
Why we enjoyed our internship:
Professional and personal support
Provision of a theory-based background
Additional work shadowing possibilities
What we learned:
Practical application of theory-based knowledge. Working with patients. Looking beyond the ‘horizons’ of the profession.
Our biggest success / Our greatest experience:
It was a valuable experience to carry out audiological measurements as part of the daily work and routines. The additional possibilities provided made the internship a real hit!
How we secured the internship:
The head of degree programme had contacts with the internship institute and submitted an official application on our behalf.
What we want to do in the future:
Speech therapy is a broad discipline. Audiology is a part of it which interests us, and we could certainly imagine working in this field in the future, although we do not want to just become fixed on one field. The internship at the clinic in Innsbruck convinced us to see audiology as a future career focus.
