Admissions

How can I be admitted as an international applicant?

Am I an international applicant?

You are an international applicant if you are not an Austrian citizen, but

  • from an EU country, the EEA or Switzerland, or
  • from a third country.

What requirements do I have to meet?

Basically, you will have to meet the same requirements as Austrian students and you have the same chances of being admitted. But there are some special things to note.

What documents do I have to submit?

You need to supply the same documents as Austrian applicants. In addition, you are required to furnish

Note

The letter of application and the CV must be submitted in English. Other application documents (with the exception of copies of original documents) can be submitted in English or German.

What requirements apply to my international documents?

Special regulations apply to documents that have not been issued in Austria. Your documents must fulfil these regulations to be accepted. Different provisions may apply depending on your country of origin: see the Translation and Authentication Guidelines by country.

Note

Copies of all authenticated and translated documents must be submitted together with the application. Please also send us copies of all certificates and documents required to verify compliance with the admission requirements in the original language.

Tip

It will take some time to review your international documents. You should therefore submit your documents no later than 14 days prior to the application deadline.

What deadlines are there?

Deadline for meeting admission requirements:
  • Applicants with educational documents issued in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland: beginning of the course at the latest
  • Applicants with educational documents issued in a third country: application deadline of the chosen degree programme

How does the admission procedure work and what happens afterwards?

It is the same as for Austrian applicants. You will need to go through an admission procedure and will subsequently be informed about the results. Your English language skills will be assessed in the course of the admission procedure.

What will I need to do as an applicant from a third country?

International applicants from third countries are given the opportunity to apply in winter. The application deadline for the academic year 2023/2024 is 24 January 2023.

This gives you sufficient time to apply for the residence permit and/or visa required to be able to travel to Austria in time for the admissions procedure or three weeks before the start of semester.

Skype interviews are generally not permitted. In individual cases, however, it is possible to conduct a skype interview at a trustworthy partner institution of FH JOANNEUM in the applicant’s home country in agreement with the head of degree programme.

Tip

If you already have a residence permit or refugee status entitling you to study in Austria, or if you live in Austria, you may also apply in spring or summer and take part in the admissions process.

What costs are involved? Does FH JOANNEUM charge tuition fees?

Applicants from the EU, EEA or Switzerland

Students from the EU, EEA or Switzerland are not required to pay a cost contribution. The ÖH membership fee is payable per semester. More detailed information will be provided at the start of studies.

Applicants from third countries

Students from non-EU/EEA countries are required to pay a cost contribution of 727 euros per semester. In the event of acceptance, applicants from these countries are required to transfer a cost contribution for the first two semesters (1,454 euros) to FH JOANNEUM in advance. The place will then be confirmed. Information about payment and refund or exemption from the cost contribution for students from third countries can be found below.

The contribution can be refunded upon request under certain conditions, e.g. according to Sec. 1 of the Regulation on Eligible Groups of Persons. The application form for refunding of the cost contribution can be downloaded below as a PDF file.

The ÖH (student union) membership fee is additionally payable per semester.
