MA Content Strategy: How to apply

Tanja Gassler,

You’re fascinated by online communications and interested in studying Content Strategy? This article provides you with all the important information you need for a successful application.

Application deadline

Please note: Anyone wishing to apply for the Winter Semester 2023 must submit their application by 20 March 2023 at the latest. There will be no additional application round in summer!

For international applicants: the earlier, the better! Documents will only be checked for their validity after the complete application has been received. Applying early gives you time to produce any missing documents, translations or authentications, and submit them before the deadline.
See the legalisation/authentication and translation guidelines listed by country to find the information relevant for your country.

You will find all dates, deadlines and important information on applying here: Admissions

There you will also find links offering more detailed information on the following topics:

If you don’t find your degree programme listed under Application requirements, or are unsure whether your educational background is appropriate, you are welcome to ask the degree programme office directly by emailing cos@fh-joanneum.at. Additional qualifications, internships and professional experience and/or your current work are also important decision criteria for the admissions procedure.

Check Application for a list of all the required documents and certificates.

Additional tips

The portfolio should offer an overview of your (professional) activities to date, and outline any material you might have already published, whether online or offline. You are free to choose the format. Options include online portfolios such as your own website or blog, or a collection of links to work samples or online postings.

International applicants should note the information and links provided under Application about demonstrating proof of proficiency in English. For Austrian applicants: The Austrian secondary school leaving certificate (Matura) is accepted as proof of English proficiency.

The admissions interview takes place once all the admissions requirements have been met, and the application has been submitted in full and prior to the deadline. The interview dates will be sent out by email around two weeks after the application deadline. It is important to reply as promptly as possible so that the interviews can be coordinated efficiently. If you are not available on specific days within the time period given under Dates & Deadlines, please email cos@fh-joanneum.at to notify us in advance. Interviews are held in English and last for around 30 minutes.

Your studies

Information about the Curriculum is available in the My Studies section, which lists all the times you will need to attend classroom teaching in Graz. Video conferences in online courses are held during semesters on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Should these courses be held at other times, you will be given sufficient notice in advance. The largest and most important part of the online courses is run via chat channels, so that you are not bound to specific times.

The programme is organised on a part-time basis, although it is a full-time Master's degree programme. That means, as for any Master’s programme at an Austrian university of applied sciences, you must complete 30 ECTS credits per semester (i.e. 750 hours) for the Content Strategy programme. That is a considerable amount, but is worthwhile. You are encouraged to combine your professional work with your studies. By incorporating projects you are working on for your employer into your academic projects, for example, you can count time at work towards your required study time.

An important aspect of the Content Strategy programme is that students work together in study groups. For that reason, the semester starts in mid-September with an online socialisation phase, giving students the chance to get to know one another online before meeting in person for the first time in Graz in mid-October.
