Key areas of the Master’s degree programme

Product management in the insurance industry

A central component of the programme is the comprehensive examination of product management in the various insurance sectors. Students learn to develop and manage insurance products in a targeted manner and to adapt them to the requirements of customers and the market. The special features and regulatory framework conditions of the individual lines of business are taken into account – from life, health and accident insurance to industrial and commercial insurance through to property and asset insurance.

Another focus is on the development of innovative business models, for example in the context of digital platforms, embedded insurance or pay-per-use approaches. The ability to strategically position products, design them in a market-oriented manner and develop them sustainably is therefore a key area of expertise of the degree programme.

Insurance management & consulting

The Insurance Management specialisation forms the core of the Master’s degree programme and provides a deep understanding of the central tasks and challenges of the insurance industry. In addition to product-related expertise, the programme provides in-depth knowledge of the operational, technical and strategic principles of insurance management. The focus is on both traditional and forward-looking topics – from product design and risk management to reinsurance and digitalisation.

Students intensively analyse the special features of individual insurance sectors: life, health, accident, property, asset, industrial and commercial insurance. The aim is not only to understand insurance products, but also to further develop, manage and strategically position them.

The programme also focuses on actuarial principles and asset liability management (ALM) in order to ensure the long-term financial stability of insurance companies. In addition, the programme provides in-depth knowledge in the areas of reinsurance, alternative risk transfer and sales management – all of which are essential for modern insurance management.

The module ‘Innovative business models in insurance’ is particularly practical, covering current trends such as embedded insurance, digital platform models and pay-per-use concepts.

The insurance management specialisation thus prepares students specifically for responsible tasks in specialist departments, strategic units and management functions – both in traditional insurance companies and in new, technology-driven market environments.

General Business Administration

Strong financial decisions require a deep understanding of the big picture: How do companies work? How do strategies develop? And how do you successfully lead people and organisations through change? These are precisely the questions at the centre of the General Business Administration degree programme.

Here you will acquire the business management skills you need to understand, classify and apply financial expertise in a wider context.

You will deal with central aspects of modern corporate management – strategic, organisational and communicative. Topics include, among others:

  • Strategic management & corporate development
  • Entrepreneurship & business model development
  • Change management & agile organisational design
  • Leadership, motivation & team management
  • Business ethics, CSR & governance
  • Internal & external communication
  • Conflict management & decision-making culture
  • Sustainability & social responsibility in corporate management
Management requires attitude, structure and vision

As a future manager, you will not only reflect on business structures, but also develop a critical, responsible understanding of leadership. You will learn how to guide companies through transformations, how to inspire teams and how to combine economic decisions with social and ecological responsibility.

In practical exercises, case studies and group projects, you will strengthen your personal development, your strategic thinking and your ability to actively shape organisations – whether in a corporate group, a medium-sized company or in the financial industry.

Top management training and future skills

Leadership means more than just making decisions – it means providing orientation, taking responsibility and actively shaping the future. In the leadership and top management training programme, you will develop the skills you need to act as a manager at eye level – strategically, empathetically and responsibly.

The focus here is on people – in their role as decision-makers, team leaders, communicators and shapers of economic, social and ecological processes.

In addition, current cross-cutting topics such as digitalisation, sustainability, data analysis and cybersecurity are integrated. Students acquire the skills to actively shape change processes, make data-based decisions and integrate modern technologies into business practice in a meaningful way.

You will develop a comprehensive, practical skills profile for modern managers. The focus is on:

  • Personal Skills & Communication: Professional demeanour, clear communication, confident conflict management and convincing presentations – skills that are crucial in any leadership situation.
  • Entrepreneurship & Corporate Strategy: You will learn how to think entrepreneurially, develop new business ideas and build strategies for successful positioning in the market.
Change Management: Change is the new constant – you will develop tools and attitudes to guide organisations through transformation processes.
  • Employee leadership & motivation: You will understand how teams work, how potential is promoted and how people are inspired – based on current leadership concepts and organisational psychology.
  • Corporate governance & compliance: Legal certainty, transparency and ethical behaviour are key management tasks – you will learn how responsible corporate governance is structurally anchored.
  • Ethical, social and environmental issues in corporate management: You will deal with sustainability, diversity, social responsibility and ethical decision-making – essential aspects for modern leaders.
Leading with vision and attitude

The content of this area of study prepares you for leadership roles in finance departments, projects, teams and entire organisational units. It’s not just about methods – it’s also about attitude. You will learn how to deal with uncertainty, balance interests and assume responsibility in a complex, networked environment.

Practice-orientated learning & methodological excellence

The programme focuses on application-oriented teaching formats that prepare students for real-life decision-making situations. Simulations and international case studies enable practical, strategic thinking at the highest level.

  • Simulations with professional insurance and financial software: In simulation-based units, you will steer insurance companies through realistic scenarios. Decisions on claims settlement, loss prevention, premium calculation or sales management have a direct impact on performance and key figures – just like in reality.
  • Harvard case studies & international case analyses: You will work on case studies from top international universities such as Harvard or INSEAD. You will analyse real insurance situations – such as loss events, solvency or ESG strategies – and train your analytical and strategic thinking.

What can I specialise in during my studies?

As part of the Master’s degree programme, students have the opportunity to choose a specific specialisation in the field of insurance controlling or insurance consulting. These specialisations allow students to hone their professional profile in line with their professional interests and career goals.

The choice of specialisation is made during the course of study and provides sufficient time and insight to make a well-founded decision in line with personal interests. Both specialisations are practice-oriented and offer excellent career prospects in the insurance industry.

Specialisation: Insurance Controlling

This specialisation is aimed at students who wish to study the financial management and regulatory protection of insurance companies. The specialisation focuses on topics such as integrated controlling systems, capital planning and risk management. The aim is to analyse, monitor and strategically manage the financial performance of insurance companies.

Students learn how to systematically analyse key business figures, use management tools and prepare strategic decisions based on data. In addition, methods for risk measurement and capital allocation are taught, which are directly applied in practice – for example in the development of business plans or the management of technical provisions.

Graduates of this specialisation are particularly in demand in the areas of corporate management, financial and risk analysis, Solvency II reporting, controlling, internal auditing or capital planning – both in insurance companies and in consultancies or supervisory organisations.

Specialisation: Insurance Consulting

This specialisation prepares students for advisory and conceptual tasks in the insurance industry – particularly at the interfaces to sales, law and product development. The content includes risk analyses, the development of suitable coverage concepts and an examination of the legal framework and sales regulations.

Students acquire the ability to assess complex risk situations, take legal principles into account and develop customised insurance solutions – both in direct contact with customers and in internal specialist consulting, product development or sales support.

The focus here is on an integrated view of technical expertise, legal security and communication skills – a combination that is particularly in demand in practice.

The Insurance Consulting specialisation is particularly suitable for all those who aspire to consulting-intensive roles with a high level of customer or project responsibility – both in traditional insurance companies and in the dynamic environment of InsurTechs or consulting firms.
