Food: Product and Process Design

To graduate from your degree programme, you must:

• successfully complete all the classes
• produce a Master’s thesis, which must be approved
• pass the Master’s examination

Your title on graduation will be “Master of Science in Engineering (MSc)“.

The Master’s thesis is a scientific paper that our students write during the 4th semester. It serves to demonstrate that the student is able to work independently on scientific problems related to food product and process development.

The student decides the topic of the Master’s thesis together with their company. While writing their thesis, students are supported by the company and offered academic guidance from a supervisor on the degree programme.

In preparation for and during the Master’s thesis, students attend a seminar organised for small groups and one-on-one support. Once complete, the Master’s thesis must be presented to the company in the presence of the FH JOANNEUM supervisor prior to the Master’s examination.

Students are examined in German. The board examination is held before an examination senate consisting of experts in the field, and is open to the public. The examination senate comprises at least three members, including the chair.

The exam comprises the presentation and defence of the Master’s thesis. This is followed by an interview in which the student is required to present the knowledge they have acquired during their studies. It is important that the candidate can demonstrate their in-depth theoretical and practical expertise gained in the two pre-selected examination subjects.

Our graduates are well prepared to launch their professional careers. However those who would like to continue their education can enrol on a doctoral programme at a university of technology or choose to study for a postgraduate degree.
