Fundamentals of logic and Boolean algebra, binary numbers, prime numbers and applications, methods of mathematical proof, graphs and graph algorithms, matrices and linear equation systems, introduction to financial mathematics, fundamentals of linear optimisation.
M02: Informatics 1 | Lecture/Practical (IL) | Coursecode: 220422102 Informatics 1 for Students of Business Informatics 3 SWS 4 ECTS
The focus of this course unit is on technical informatics. The storage of information in computers is explained starting from the principles of informatics. This includes methods for minimising redundancy such as Huffman's algorithm. Students gain a sound understanding of bits and bytes as a basis for the development of computer systems. Both simple reference models (von Neumann) and the basic principles of modern architectures will be explained. Another key element is providing students with knowledge about memory structure and access mechanisms in order to help them understand the difference between primitive and reference data types. The history of the programming languages and programming paradigms is outlined based on machine language and microcode. Finally the course unit shows the students how simple structured programs are executed by the computer and where and how the values, variables, parameters and function results are stored…

This course unit provides students with a general introduction to operating system architectures and the principles of virtualisation. The focus is on providing a general understanding of hardware abstraction and virtualisation. This involves explaining the basic characteristics of processor and memory management and providing an overview of common partition and file systems. Students carry out practical exercises in installation, configuration and error correction thus gaining an insight into the structure and functional principles of the Microsoft Windows client operating system, which is in use around the world. The course unit demonstrates key administrative processes of user and access management (authentication, authorisation, audit) and concepts of data security (access control lists, encryption, shadow copies) and associated backup strategies. M04: Computer Networks 1 | Lecture/Practical (IL) | Coursecode: 220422106 Basics of Internet Technologies 4 SWS 5 ECTS
The lecture part of this course unit gives an introduction to the fundamentals of internet and LAN technologies using the established layer model. In the practical lab exercises, students learn how to plan and implement structured cabling, network configuration of end devices (PCs), the configuration of a simple web server, analysis of network traffic using a sniffer program, use of Ethernet switches, use of Internet access networks (DSL, mobile networks, FTTH), performance measurements in LANs, planning and configuration of secure corporate wireless networks (WLANs) and simple router configurations.

They write simple structured texts, e.g. essays (cause & effect essay, comparison/contrast essay) and summaries at academic level. Students practise listening comprehension of English news broadcasts and presentations on general, business-related and subject-specific topics in the field of information and communication technology (e.g. VOA Special English). The students develop their grammar and reading skills and enhance their informatics and business vocabulary.

The course unit is designed to compensate for different levels of prior knowledge of computer programming.

This course unit provides an introduction to cryptography (AES, RSA, ECC, hash), routing and switching using the most common protocols. It involves a theoretical introduction to the OSI layer model, Ethernet framing, switched networks, VLAN, RSTP, MSTP, IP, VLSM and CIDR, IP networks, static routing, RIP, OSPF, route redistribution, BGP, IPv6 and OSPFv3, followed by practical exercises supported by network simulation software.

This course unit promotes self-learning competency and self-study and enhances the grammar skills and business vocabulary at academic level. Students also build up vocabulary in the field of information and communication technologies. Students provide recapitulations, learn about efficient communication strategies and prepare short presentations on relevant subject-specific topics. The students practise understanding and summarising audio and video input (TED Talks) and speed reading comprehension of longer general business and subject-specific texts. Students also learn to write and present short academic texts.

The focus of this course unit is on teaching students how to prepare interesting presentations that are well structured, rhetorically appealing and clearly understandable using different presentation media. Video feedback is used to help students develop their own presentation style and present different topics in a way that is appropriate to the target group.

The course unit gives an introductory overview of the basics of normative business management. This provides the basis for presenting and discussing the strategic and operative aspects of business management. The fundamentals of planning and control, corporate organisation (structural and procedural organisation) as well as leadership models and aspects will also be discussed. Entrepreneurial thinking and the course content are expanded and consolidated by discussing case studies and developing business models.

This course unit provides a basic introduction to project management and aims to enhance the understanding and practical application of project management in a comprehensive project scenario. The project theory presented will be discussed in small project teams and will be practised and implemented by the students in the form of competence drills. Each student will finally document and interpret the project content and results in writing. Collaboration with a course unit from another module of this semester are designed to promote the interdisciplinary approach both in direct/indirect and synchronous/asynchronous exchange with the lecturer.

The course unit deals with the fundamentals of different communication theories, starting from the models developed by Paul Watzlawick and Schulz von Thun. The focus is on developing and experiencing one’s own communication skills in different situations. The students learn to develop strategies for improving their communication skills and promoting active listening. In addition to providing theoretical knowledge the unit also focuses on practical exercises in which students learn to recognise and optimise their own communication patterns. They are made familiar with discussion models and communication strategies for successful conflict management (e.g. Harvard concept) and apply them in practical exercises. The unit also promotes the students’ personal development and outlines successful communication within companies.

This course unit develops and consolidates the professional linguistic abilities and skills (e.g. effective communication within a team, English for decision makers, English for business trips) using subject-specific texts and topics related to the key subjects taught on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Information Management. Exercises include short simulations, discussions and presentations on subject-specific business topics. A focus is also placed on providing students with professional vocabulary used in different business contexts (e.g. HR, marketing, accounting, finances, international trade, business ethics, quality management, project management). Links to other subject-specific course units are designed to provide students with a practical learning environment.

This course unit is about classical server-centred web applications with a focus on practical applications using the Java enterprise stack. It provides the fundamentals of HTTP and all aspects of web application development. This includes token-based security mechanisms and the possibility of mapping an object-oriented data model to relational databases (OR mapping).

This course unit prepares students for writing a Bachelor's thesis in one of the key areas of the degree programme. This includes clarifying and critically discussing key terms such as 'science' and 'academic paper'; typical structure and thematic criteria of academic papers, different forms of scientific questions and how they are formulated, the corresponding thematic planning and methodological implementation of the planned research project; methods of source and literature research, including qualitative evaluation and use in the text as well as forms of citation. Students will practise their skills of reflection and critical discussion in academic papers and develop an independent working style.

This course unit develops and consolidates the professional linguistic abilities and skills using subject-specific texts and topics related to the key subjects taught on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Information Management. Students practise writing academic texts, such as abstracts, and scientific papers on information technology topics. Mini-presentations on subject-specific academic and business topics provide additional vocabulary for a future career in the field.
M32: General Skills and English 4 | Seminar (SE) | Coursecode: 220422410 Team Training 1 SWS 1 ECTS
The seminar helps students develop and experience their own communication behaviour in different situations. They are given an insight into their own communication patterns and analyse these patterns using self-reflection and peer feedback based on elements from systemic theory, group dynamics and coaching. The students apply the acquired knowledge of conflict management and coaching in practice, develop coaching units and implement them in small teams.

5. Semester

M33: Business Management and Organisation 3 | Lecture/Practical (IL) | Coursecode: 220422501 Operations Management 3 SWS 5 ECTS
This course unit provides basic knowledge of the operational tasks and processes within companies, especially production and logistics companies. Operations management (OM) focuses on the efficient and effective provision of products and services using limited resources. The topics discussed include production planning and inventory management (MPS and MRPII), parts lists and work schedules, batch processes, queuing systems and stochastic processes, production control systems, just-in-time und supply chain management concepts. Specific topics related to digital factories will also be dealt with and discussed in the context of digital transformation. The theoretical fundamentals and practical methods of process simulation will be discussed and applied in order to support and consolidate the aspects of application.
M34: Software Engineering 3 | Lecture/Practical (IL) | Coursecode: 220422502 Web Application Development 2 3 SWS 5 ECTS
This course unit focuses on highly interactive single page applications based on popular JavaScript application frameworks. The interaction with the server is via secure REST interfaces. The necessary basics are provided in the course unit, which also deals with responsive design to round off the technical skills.

Coaching and assistance in finding a topic and defining the content of the second project-oriented Bachelor's thesis which is assigned to the project to be carried out in the 5th semester. A supervisor supports the student in writing his/her Bachelor's thesis. The topic of the Bachelor's thesis is to be selected according to the project. The aim of the thesis is to generate subject-specific scientific findings, develop them for publication and apply them in practice as part of the associated interdisciplinary project.

Independent application and use of key methods and tools of project management using the project as a case study. The course unit also includes general coaching, discussion and reflection of typical project situations using the projects as examples.

The objectives of this course unit are manifold. On the one hand, it aims to expand the professional expertise of the degree programme by investigating innovative topics from the respective research areas and by publishing relevant results. On the other hand, the projects also serve to transfer the expertise of the degree programme to external partners and/or customers. Specific topics related to digital factories will also be dealt with and discussed in the context of digital transformation.
