Professional writing is a craft that can be learned. This is the motto of the seminar. Based upon the question of what constitutes a (good) text, the seminar systematically shows various ways of composing a text and the rules accordingly applied. Besides the analysis of sample texts and discussions on different writing styles and genres emphasis lies on writing own texts. Additionally, an overview of proof-reading and editorial work is given. Focus also lies on descriptions of themselves and others and on project presentations. Aims: Students should get an understanding of what makes a good text. Hereby focus lies on the balance between form, style and content: students learn to assess different communication situations correctly and to chose the adequate focus in form, style and content.

The second part of the course "creative texting" presents various tools and methods for the development and refinement of an individual style in writing and texting. Practical examples taken from journalism and literature help to demonstrate how to discard unnecessary verbal ballast, how to breathe new life into sterile texts, how to tell things instead of just listing them, how to expand or to compress information. The content of the course focuses on micro-narratives, on texts for personal presentation and product depiction. Special editorial projects will concentrate on the text forms necessary for Social Media, Blogs and a spectrum of marketing purposes. Targets: Enabling the students to identify stylistically problematic sequences within texts and to enhance them -
Training the students to understand the principles of textual coherence and cohesion. Enable them to analyze texts according to the criteria of coherence and cohesion and to rectify shortcomings in their own texts. Train students to compress complex information and to summarize in a compact manner (titles, slogans,captions, teasers, abstracts, summaries, promotion texts and advertising slogans) Teach students to recognize the different elements of a "story to apply them and to position them to maximum dramatic effect. Train the students to grasp the difference between telling a story through its facts instead of simply listing the latter (snapshots, webcams). Enable students to analyze complex texts and to apply this skill in their own texts. Teaching students how to textually expand information and how to structure long texts coherently with the help of narrative techniques.

The students are introduced to writing critical texts and reviews. Basic elements and steps of opinion oriented writing are presented: analysis, exact description, contextualisation, symptomatisation, story telling etc. These techniques are supposed to help students with writing project write ups and press releases. Apart from the analysis of text examples and the discussion of phrasing the course focuses on original texts. The students should also get an insight into proof reading and editorial work. Targets: The students understand what criticism in journalism means. They can identify a good and a bad review. The students understand what objectivity and opinions mean in the journalistic context. The students can differentiate between various types of review. The students see that story telling is the basis of reviewing. The students understand the difference between merely listing and telling a story. The students can distinguish between neutral and glowing texts. The students are capable of contextualizing. The students know how to symptomatise. The students are able to write a review of some cultural matter. The students are capable of transferring the presented knowledge to their own texts.
