Sound Design

Students carry out projects combining various media and synergetically using different technologies. Over the course of three semesters, they undertake production processes based on a practical division of the workload.

The first project revolves around experimental research into current scenarios and products in sound design, finishing with production of a demonstrator or mock-up. The key focus is to develop an innovative and visionary idea. The second semester allows students to refine the results they have obtained during iterative processes and to narrow down the relevant topic. They then create a fully-functioning prototype in which the experimental component predominates. The process is concluded in the third semester: the students understand how to transform a visionary and innovative idea and experimental prototype into a marketable product or scenario.

The students can apply and implement their own project ideas. They also work in cooperation with business and industry partners and as part of funded research projects. The Institute of Design & Communication at FH JOANNEUM and the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz cooperate with renowned partners from the automotive industry, food production industry, consumer electronics sector and other fields where sound design is relevant. We consistently include our students in our current research projects. They can also work in interdisciplinary groups, collaborating with the Communication Design, Media Design and Interaction Design courses at FH JOANNEUM.
