The lecture gives an introduction to the field of general chemistry. This course is designed to enhance the students’ oral communication skills and combines existing vocabulary knowledge with technical terminology related to environmental impacts and technologies. The group project is aimed at combining the technical vocabulary with the relevant language devices (e.g.: language of presentations, language of statistics). This practice-oriented course also provides an interdisciplinary link to a technical course of the 2nd semester.

This integrated course provides students with knowledge of urban and regional planning in order to enable them to design optimal living spaces and regions with due consideration of the environmental impacts involved. Existing mobility systems will be analysed and weaknesses assessed. The course covers a range of transport routes from road, rail, water and air to pipelines and gives an overview of the different transport modes. Topics also include transport, storage and loading devices and an overview of modern and future mobility systems.

Thermodynamics

The lecture builds on the basic concepts of thermodynamics (state, state variable, process) to teach the first and second laws of thermodynamics. State variables and thermodynamic processes are visually represented in state diagrams (Ts, hs, pv). The thermodynamic properties of working media such as water/steam, ideal gases and gas mixtures are presented. The Carnot cycle is used as an example of an ideal reference process.

After a brief recap of mathematical and thermodynamic basics, this integrated course explains the cycle processes of thermal energy engineering (Rankine, Brayton, Otto, Diesel etc.), followed by a description of the most common technological components. In addition to power generation, the course also presents technologies for the supply and distribution of heat (combined heat and power, boiler technology, district heating). A field trip gives students an insight into practical application.
