Methods and strategies to determine architecture and space, as well as an examination of recognised design models and theories in an introductory block of lectures form the basis for the student to independently write a seminar paper. The aim of this paper is to increase the students’ competences in perception of design concepts and architectural background. The journey through time from the Classical Modernism and Pre-modern via Structuralism, Minimalism to Deconstructivism and High-tech Architecture familiarises the graduates with the necessary terminology as well as the cultural development and cultural change.

The living space of the 21st century is the city, whose characteristics include different forms of density as well as social, cultural and aesthetic diversity. Housing is one of the most important urban land uses and therefore has a city-building function. It also influences the social structure of cities, as its production and financing have a significant impact on the provision of adequate housing for all population groups. With a geographical focus on Western Europe (and the USA), this course provides a first structured overview of the historical development of urban housing and its urban insertion in the context of social, health-promoting, economic, political and legal frameworks.

In the theoretical part, a topic area is scientifically examined and processed. Based on this theoretical treatise, the findings flow comprehensibly into the design part. Through the work, the students gain in-depth expertise in a self-selected, architecture-specific area. The special orientation of the degree programme towards healthy living, working and housing is to be scientifically integrated into the work and aspects of sustainability are to be discussed.
